I grew up in Kani, in Gifu prefecture — a small city held by quiet nature — as the eldest of four, with three younger sisters. As a child, I struggled to keep my emotions in check; trouble found me often enough that my parents were called to school again and again. I could not explain my own behaviour, even to myself, and came to feel that human relations were never simple. Unable to find a place among my classmates, I gradually chose solitude.

Keeping my distance from others, I drifted through ordinary student years, and after university began working as an automotive mechanic. In that quiet routine I met a woman, and let myself dream of building a future with her. That dream broke when she vanished without a word.

Alone in the room we had shared, sitting with that solitude, a quiet question rose to the surface — was this how I wanted to live? I left the company, and at twenty-four, in the spring, entered photography school. My first subject was a man who lived on the street I walked each day on my way to class. To speak with him, to make his portrait, felt like crossing into territory that was not ordinary — and yet he received me with warmth.

Through the viewfinder he was beautiful; and as his image rose slowly out of the darkroom developer, I felt — for the first time — that I was bound to other people.

After graduating I joined a commercial studio in Tokyo, and between long days of assignments I began walking the streets, photographing the people I met. I had thought that any place would do for portraits — but Ueno Park drew me in. It is one of the strangest, most generous corners of the city: families and couples, students from the art university, drag artists, those who live on its benches — all of them intersecting, all of them somehow held by the same ground.

At the heart of the park, the lotus rising and dying on Shinobazu Pond carried the rhythm of the seasons — life and death folded into each other — and I could not look away. I went there nearly every day, and kept photographing.

One day I met a painter who sat on the same bench from dawn until dusk, painting his own face. The portrait had been worked over so heavily that the features were no longer recognizable — almost grotesque. He said to me:

“I'm only interested in human beings. People are utterly ugly, and beautiful, at the same time. There are so many of them in this park — that's why I come here, to paint while watching them.”

In that moment I think I understood, for the first time, why I had been walking these paths each day, why I kept approaching strangers and asking to make their picture. Ueno Park is a place where natural beauty and human contradiction meet — ugliness and beauty intertwined. I will keep photographing what changes there.
