Yuta Fuchikami is a Tokyo-based photographer working at the intersection of documentary and portraiture. Since 2016, his practice has centered on the streets of Ueno, where he photographs strangers at close range with a direct, unhurried approach. The work is a sustained investigation into how individuals occupy urban space — the postures, the looks, the small negotiations between a body and its surroundings.
His photographs resist easy classification. They are neither street photography in the decisive-moment tradition nor formal portraiture. The subjects are often caught mid-gesture, mid-thought — present but unperformed. Fuchikami brings a quietness to the encounter that allows something private to surface in public.
He works primarily in Tokyo, with ongoing projects that extend to other cities and regions across Japan. His books and exhibitions have been shown at institutions including the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and ZEN FOTO GALLERY.
